In most cases, the nbn will have already been installed at your address, or nbn co will come and install it for no cost.
nbn New Development Charge
For new homes connected to the nbn that have never had internet before, there is a $300 nbn New Development Charge which you’ll need to pay to nbn co.

We can normally connect your Telstra home internet in 3 to 6 days after we process your order.
- We’ll send you a reference number via email so you can track the progress of your order.
- We’ll also send your Telstra Smart Modem to you by express delivery in 1-3 days metro, and 3-5 days regional.
- If your property hasn’t previously been connected to the nbn network, an nbn co technician may need to come to your address to set it up. Charges may apply.

The maximum speeds you can get are determined by the access technology type installed at your address.
For example, Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connections can usually get higher max speeds, while Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connections usually get lower max speeds.
If your tech type can’t support the typical evening speeds of a plan, we don’t make it available to you. You can read more about this in our nbn key facts sheet.

The nbn technology upgrade is a no-cost upgrade of your nbn connection to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) technology so you can access faster speeds options.
It’s a free upgrade offered by nbn co, to eligible customers on FTTN or FTTC connections.
How do I get the nbn upgrade?
To get the upgrade you need to be on an FTTN or FTTC connection in a selected area and meet nbn co’s requirement to take up a plan that meets the minimum speed required for eligibility depending on your current tech type. To do this, message us or call us on 13 22 00.
The technology upgrade is subject to service qualification and is not available at all addresses.

Ask yourself two questions:
- How many people use the internet at home at the same time?
- What do they typically use the internet for?
Generally, lower speed plans are better for smaller households with lighter internet usage, and higher speed plans are better for bigger households with heavy usage like multiple streaming. -
The Telstra Smart Modem 3 has a built-in 4G SIM, so if there is an outage it switches to our 4G mobile network to keep you connected.
Once the outage is fixed, the modem switches back to the fixed internet network. In many cases, you won’t even know this has happened.
4G coverage required. Backup speeds capped at 25/5 Mbps. Actual speeds may be lower.

You can use our digital returns method to return your old modem free of charge.
Here’s how it works: We receive your cancellation notification- We send you an SMS with the eParcel code.
- You take the eParcel code and modem to your nearest Australia Post office where they will package it for you and return it free of charge.
Note: Return your modem to avoid being charged a non-return fee. If your modem is faulty, there is no charge for non-return of the modem.

An nbn service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your maximum attainable speed after connection and let you know if your line is not able to achieve the maximum speed of your plan.
The nbn™ tier figures represent wholesale maximum network speeds during off-peak periods. The nbn™ tier figures and ‘typical busy period speeds’ are not measures of customers’ actual in-premises speeds, which may be slower. Not all customers receive these speeds. Plan prices
Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions). If you don’t like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan or add-ons. If you cancel, just pay out your device, accessories and services in full, and you will receive a pro-rata refund for your plan charge for the remainder of your month.
Speed Add-ons
Typical busy period speeds for the new nbn tiers Superfast and Ultrafast are an estimate only. We do not have sufficient data yet to calculate the typical busy period speed of these add-ons. Actual speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including in-home setup and wiring, For ordinary personal domestic use. Installation
Standard installation includes self-installation of your modem, eligibility criteria applies. Extra charges apply for non-standard installation of Telstra and NBN Co equipment and for premises in new developments.
nbn™ New Development Charge
In areas serviced by nbn co, Telstra may be required to connect services onto the nbn network. If you’re in a new development and not already connected to the nbn network, nbn co may charge $300 to connect your premises to the nbn network. If applicable, we will bill that charge to you. Once you are connected to nbn fibre, you won’t be able to move to our copper network. Extra charges may apply for non-standard or professional install of Telstra or nbn co equipment and for premises in new developments.
Telstra Smart Modem™
Mobile backup is available to premises in 4G coverage areas. Check coverage at telstra.com/coverage. Your mobile backup connection is capped at 25Mbps for downloads and 5Mbps for uploads. Actual speeds may be lower due to local conditions and content accessed.
Medical security alarms, lift phones and fire indicator panels
If you have alarms such as back-to-base security alarm or medi-alert connected to your home phone service, it’s important you contact your medical or security provider to check if they’re compatible with the service and identify what alternatives are available.
Kayo offer
For Telstra Personal customers taking up a new home internet service. Roll onto Kayo Basic standard month-to-month fees after 12 months unless you change or cancel beforehand. Must sign up to Kayo via Telstra Offers Hub. Not compatible with any other Kayo offer or third-party billing platforms.
If you cancel within 12 months, you will lose the remainder of, and cannot restart, the Kayo offer. Not available on Kayo One. Current Kayo One customers need to upgrade to Kayo Basic first to be eligible for this offer.
